MISSION CREEK EAST PARK PLAYGROUND
Kelowna, BC
BENCH was retained by the Regional District of Central Okanagan as the prime consultant for the conceptual design, detail design and contract administration of the Mission Creek East Park area, with the purpose of activating an under-utilized zone within the flagship regional park, while also offering a more open-ended, less prescriptive play experience than that available in a more traditional existing playground nearby.
The scope of the project included the design of an event and picnic lawn area, a natural playground and outdoor classroom space, and an expanded parking area to meet increased user demand. The custom natural play features, made of local fir and cottonwood, encourage active, nature-based play in alignment with the mission of RDCO Regional Parks. The playground is near the main hub of the RDCO’s outdoor education programming, the EECO Centre, and is used to support events and classes there.
